Candlesticks in silver, Valladolid 1777
Pair of silver candlesticks, by Antonio González Téllez (1720- 1778).
With contrasting marks, engraved, coat of arms and legend; in Valladolid, 1777.
On the base of each one there is a heraldic coat of arms accompanied by the word "RAVAGO", perhaps in reference to Francisco Rábago y Noriega (Tresabuela, Cantabria, 1685 - Madrid, 1763), a prominent Spanish ecclesiastic, Jesuit, royal confessor to King Ferdinand VI, who had personal dealings with Pope Benedict XIV and the Marquis of the Holy See.
Pope Benedict XIV and the Marquis of Ensenada and professor at the University of Valladolid.
The contrast marks indicate the pieces in Valladolid, related to Antonio González Téllez (1720-1778). This master worked as a faithful contraster in that city between 1743 and 1774/1778. His work includes the silver altar frontal of the Virgen del Sagrario (Valladolid Cathedral), by the Valladolid silversmiths Juan Antonio Sanz de Velasco and Miguel Fernández Yáñez de Vega, who completed in the last third of the 18th century a work begun in 1693 by the silversmith José de Aranda. The other punch mark could be related to Carlos or José Reconcho.
