Pair of stirrups. Chile, 18th century
Pair of stirrups made of carved wood and iron, 18th century Chile. Each piece of wood that forms part of the stirrup is decorated on the outside with geometric and vegetal elements, and a surrounding piece of iron.
As metal was reserved for other uses during the 18th century, wood began to be used more frequently to make stirrups in Chile. The shape of the present pair, which follows the usual typology of the period, seems to have been derived from Asturian pieces, preferred over the metal stirrups to protect from water, branches, etc., and it was the development of craftsmanship, especially by the Jesuits in the area, that led to this type of carving and decoration, which has survived to the present day.
Measurements: 16 x 20 x 17 cm.
