Chandelier signed Bacarrat. France, 19th century
Chandelier. Baccarat (with mark). Glass and gilt bronze. France, 19th century.
Chandelier of gilt bronze and clear glass with eight lights. The upper part has a series of curved rods from which hang glass beads of various shapes (flower, teardrop). The central axis of the candelabra (made of metal and covered with glass with abundant curves) has a centrepiece in bronze and glass beads (very often seen in French candelabra of the mid-19th century and in the Louis XVI style). A large number of glass beads of various shapes (circular, flowers, teardrops, ovals, etc.) hang from all the elements that make up the piece.
The Société Baccarat (which continues to produce luxury glassware in this French city) began as a glass workshop founded by Louis-Joseph de Laval Montmorency, with the permission of Louis XV of France, in 1764. They received the first official order from royalty in 1823, leading to a large number of requests addressed to members of the leading European families, nobility, heads of state, etc. Around 1860, the company began to sign its products with a registered trademark, usually on the base of the work, although it was also common for other bronziers to use Baccarat glass because of its fame and quality.
Measurements: 65 x 65 x 120 cm.
