Follower of Baldassarre Franceschini (1611-1689) - Santa Catalina de Sena
Oil on canvas. Second half of the 17th century, following models by Baldassare Franceschini (Volterra, 1611 - Florence, 1689).
The figure of the saint is shown, dressed in her habit, three-quarter length, on a neutral background, joining her hands in prayer and with a crown of thorns on her head, looking towards the group of elements formed by a small sculpture of the Crucified Christ, a skull and some flowers.
Compare the present work with another of the same subject by Carlo Dolci (in Dulwick Picture Gallery,
London) and in particular with others by the aforementioned Baldassare Franceschini, safe or attributed, in their various versions (Musée de Grenoble, France, MG407; collections of the Duomo of Volterra, Italy).
