École européenne s. XVIII - Narcisse
Narcissus. Oil on panel. 19th century.
The painting depicts the classical myth of Narcissus. According to classical mythology, Narcissus was a very beautiful young man who cruelly rejected the love of the nymph Echo, and was condemned by Nemesis to fall in love with his own image. Thus, when he saw himself reflected in a fountain or spring, he was absorbed and ended up committing suicide, becoming the flower that bears his name.
Size: 59.5 x 81.5 cm (support); 71 x 5.5 x 99 cm (frame).
