Camillo Castello Branco (Mártires, Lisbon, 16 March 1825 - São Miguel de Seide, Famalicão, 1 June 1890) was one of the greatest writers in the history of Portuguese-language literature. He was also one of the first writers to make a living exclusively from his writing in Portugal.
A controversial character, he was nevertheless admired by all the great figures of his time, and his exceptional work managed to rise him to the category of cult author. In fact, it's impossible to understand the Portuguese 19th century without considering his profound influence on the culture of the century of the locomotive, of newspapers and of a progress longed for by a people coming out of impossible wars and trying to rebuild their identity.
It is with genuine veneration for the master that we at ANNO celebrate the 200th ANNIVERSARY of Camillo, an author who touched on everything that matters in human life, from love to the deepest suffering; but who, above all, taught us how to write like no one else.
Happy birthday and thank you, golden writer.
