MONKS PLAYING A SHAKUHACHI FLUTE, SHOWA JAPAN ART
This is woodblock print by Wada SanzÅ (和田 ä¸‰é€ , 1883 to 1968; here signed ä¸‰é€ SanzÅ), titled "Komuso (Itinerant Flute Player)" from the series æ˜å’Œè·æ¥ 絵尽 Occupations in Showa Era, 1940. The "Showa occupation series" started in September 1938, interrupted by war shortages in 1943 after completing 48; made 24 more 1954-58, published by the Kyoto Hanga-in Institute. After the Tokugawa Shogunate fell to the loyal forces of the Emperor, komusÅ temples and their monks were abolished in 1871. The shakuhachi survived as the musical instrument it had always been.
