A gouache painting on paper depicting a portrait of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), an American lawyer and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. After one of the most famous photos, the accidental creation of one of the most iconic portraits in American history by Alexander Gardner (Scottish, American photographer, 1821-1882). The cracked plate image of Abraham Lincoln was made at a sitting at Gardner's Washington 7th Street, NW, studio on February 5, 1865. Inscribed in pencil, Abraham Lincoln Painted After Library Congress Photograph, on the back. Unsigned. Matted. One of a kind artwork.
