1882 ANTIQUE ITALIAN KING TWENTY LIRE GOLD COIN
An antique Italian 1882 Umberto I 20 Lire Gold coin. Italy issued 20 lire gold coins from 1861 to 1927. These coins are known as marenghi, the singular of which is marengo. The obverse bears a left facing portrait of King Umberto I by Filippo Speranza, chief engraver at the Roman mint. The engraver's name is in the truncated neck. The coin bears the inscription, Umberto I Re DItalia. Designed by Filippo Speranza, the reverse bears the crowned Savoy shield of arms decorated with the Collare dell'Annunziata, Collar of the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunziata, the highest honour in the House of Savoia. This is encompassed by a wreath of a branch of laurel to the left and oak to the right. The value is split on either side of the shield, L for Lire and 20. The design is topped by the Star of Italy. The R mint mark for the Roman mint is below the wreath to the left. Antique European Collectible Numismatics And Exonumia.
