18TH C RUSSIAN ORTHODOX OUR LADY BURNING BUSH ICON
An antique 18th-century Russian Orthodox icon, Mother of God with Christ Child in the Burning bush iconography. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board with raised kovcheg borders. The central image of Virgin Mary and Jesus is enclosed in an eight-pointed star formed by two quadrangles in dark green and red colors. Symbols of the four evangelists are depicted in the stars corners. This allegorical iconography was formed in Orthodox tradition in the 16th century.
