An Antique Chinese Song Dynasty Ceramic Cup/Bowl with Provenance. CIZHOU'-type NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY. The steep gently rounded sides rising to a slightly everted rim, covered overall in a creamy-white slip and transparent glaze, the glaze finishing revealing the buff-colored stoneware body. Ca. Song Dynasty, 11-12 Century. Size h 1 3/4 X d 2 1/4. Provenance: Collection of Edward Hyers Clayton (1886-1946). American writer and missioner. E.H. Clayton and his wife were missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in charge of Wayland Academy, a missionary school in Hangzhou, China from 1912 to 1942. E.H. Clayton wrote a book Heaven Below based on his living experience in China.
