PAIR OF CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE BALUSTER JARS AND LIDS
Ca. 18th century. A pair of Chinese Famille Rose baluster jars and lids. The body is decorated with multiple cartouches against a black diaper ground, depicting birds and peonies. Two pink diaper ground band can be seen on the neck and base. Baluster jars like this are also known as "General Jar", as the shape of the lid resembles a general's helmet. It could also possibly be referred to the most initial function of such jars being an urn for soldiers who died in battle. The form of the jar conveyed an upright military stance impression, and was extremely versatile in accommodating different styles of decorations, making it a highly desirable household decorative piece during the 17th century. By the 20th century, General Jars were mass produced and commonly included in bridal dowry. Size: 440mm x 300mm; Weight: 8kg
