VIKING AGE IRON AXE HEAD
Ca. AD 900 - 1100.
An iron battle axe with a wide, fan-shaped blade, tapering cheek, heavy poll and a socket. In battle, Viking axes were fearsome weapons, capable of delivering devastating blows to both armed foes and wooden shields alike. The design of the Viking axe featured a long, sturdy haft and a sharp, often bearded blade, optimized for both cutting and piercing. Whether used in hand-to-hand combat or thrown with precision from a distance, Viking axes were formidable weapons that instilled fear in their adversaries.
Size: 140mm x 100mm; Weight: 395g
Provenance: Property of an Oxfordshire art professional; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1980s on the UK / International art markets.
