SAMANID POTTERY BOWL WITH CALLIGRAPHY
Ca. AD 900 - 1000. A slip-painted pottery bowl of conical form atop a short foot, on a white ground decorated in manganese brown around the rim with a continuous Kufic inscription and dot to the centre. The Samanid dynasty was known for producing a wide range of slip-painted pottery throughout the 10th century. The use of white/cream slips as a base allowed for intricate designs and calligraphy to be applied in bold contrasting colours, creating stunning works of art that are still revered to this day. Size: L:100mm / W:240mm ; 705g Provenance: Private London collection; ex. UK art market prior to 2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
