AN ILLUMINATED QAJAR QUR'AN
Iran, Ca. 18th - 19th century AD. An Arabic manuscript on paper, 122 leaves, elegantly written in naskh script with 11 lines to the page in black ink, sura headings in red, and vocalisation in black and red. Text panels are ruled in gold and black. The manuscript opens with two splendidly illuminated double pages, richly decorated with floral motifs in vibrant hues of red, blue, and gold. Several further pages include illuminated chapter headings within lobed and cartouche-shaped panels. Marginalia and interlinear commentary in neat hand. The manuscript is preserved in its original lacquer binding, the boards beautifully painted with a bouquet of naturalistic flowers in shades of vermilion, orange, and green, framed within a series of fine floral borders. The reverse covers and spine were later restored in red leather. The doublures feature fine calligraphy in diamond-shaped panels set within outlined frames.Size: 205mm x 125mm; Weight: 625gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
