A FINELY CARVED SYRIAN OR OTTOMAN MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID CABINET
Syria or Turkey, Ca. 19th century AD . A remarkable cabinet of rectangular form, crafted in a traditional Syrian or Ottoman style, features intricate mother-of-pearl and bone inlay within an architectural wooden framework. The hinged top is richly decorated with geometric interlocking star motifs executed in alternating hues of shell, wood, and ivory-tone inlays. The façade consists of two hinged doors, each inset with interwoven hexagonal and cubic star patterns, framed by finely worked borders. The sides are similarly adorned with elaborate mashrabiya-style turned woodwork, further complemented by arched motifs recalling the grandeur of Ottoman architecture. The interior reveals a series of small drawers with intricate geometric inlays, ideal for storing valuables. Such pieces were highly prized throughout the Levant and the Ottoman Empire, reflecting the region’s masterful craftsmanship and deep appreciation for geometric design.Size: 495mm x 410mm; Weight: 12.7kgProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
