PAIR OF MARBLE KILIA IDOL'S HEADS
Ca. 2700 - 2300 BC. Pair of marble heads of Kilia idol, each sculpted in fine white marble, these two highly stylised heads are characteristic of the so-called ‘Kilia type’ idols, attributed to the Early Bronze Age cultures of western Anatolia and the Cycladic archipelago. Both exhibit the distinctive flattened oval face, with a sharply angled jawline, sloping crown, and a subtly curved neck stump, suggesting detachment from once fully formed figures. The minimalist abstraction of form, lacking incised detail, reflects the refined aesthetic of prehistoric Aegean sculpture, and points to a ritual or symbolic function, possibly ancestral or funerary in nature. For similar see: Sotheby's, Egyptian, Classical. and Western Asiatic Antiquities, 08 Dec. 2010, Lot. 41, The Cleveland Museum of Art, 1993.165.Size: 35-50mm x 30-40mm; Weight: 100gProvenance: Private London collection; previously in a 1980s Mayfair Family private collection.
