Portrait of bearded man holding a book
65x55, framed 85x75
Oil painting on canvas, attributed to Marco Antonio Bassetti (Verona 1586-1630) depicting a portrait of a man with a beard holding a book. "A pupil of Felice Ricci (Verona 1539-1605) he moved to Venice where he was influenced by the works of Tintoretto, Veronesi and Jacopo Bassano, he went to Rome around 1615 and there he met the paintings of Caravaggio. Returning to Venice he declined Bassano's influences and Romans and has appreciation only for Venetian painting, especially for naturists.Orbits in the context of monasteries and convents (1628).In this period his most appreciable works are the portraits in which, according to Longhi (1959) , is of a Rembrandt value and dignity, such as to be able to compete with Hals and Velazquez. He died of the plague in Verona. The revaluation of Bassetti is largely due to Longhi." ASOR STUDY
