Fahar al-Salih (Belgrado, 1964)Untitled, from the series ‘Mosaics’ n. 2003, 2023Acrylic, resin, car wash sponges66 x 80 x 5 cm
Fahar al-Salih was born in Belgrade in 1964 to an Iraqi father and Serbian mother and grew up in Kuwait before moving first to Vienna and then to Germany. He currently lives and works between Karlsruhe and Baghdad. In the mixed-media work in the ‘Mosaics’ series, al-Salih used a series of car washing sponges, the same ones he uses to mix the colours on his canvases. Starting with everyday objects, he has created a work of art whose main characteristics are the balance and harmony of colours. The same balance and harmony that can be found in the mosaics made by the first Muslim craftsmen in the Middle East, and which are a source of inspiration for al-Salih's work. By choosing to recreate the highly symbolic Islamic mosaics, the artist also values his position as an Arab artist living in Europe.
