Bernard van Orley (Brussel 1487-1541)
From 1515 onwards, he worked for Margaretha of Austria, governess of the Netherlands, and after she died, Van Orley was employed by her successor, Queen Mary of Hungary.
The Madonna and Child type refers to a work by Bernard van Orley that he painted as the left panel of a diptych for Margaret of Austria (National Institute for Art History The Hague, Illustration registry 10016991743), dated ca. 1518 (Max Friedlander, Vol. 8, no. 133).
The combination of fictitious ornamental Italian Renaissance architecture and the mobile and contrasting posture of the three kings are typical of Mannerism.
Only a few works by Barend Van Orley are monogrammed (see photographs). The artist's monogram is located on the base of the column at the bottom left.
