Antique Engraving - Siege of Alkmaar - Netherlands - Eighty Years' War - Decker
The artwork depicts the Siege of Alkmaar that occurred in 1573 during the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. It provides a bird's-eye view perspective of Alkmaar and its surrounding area during the siege. The scene captures the intensity and dynamics of the conflict.
In the foreground, Spanish troops and a group of monks are portrayed. At the bottom of the composition, a cartouche displays the Spanish storm bridge, a key element used by the Spaniards in their military strategy. The storm bridge was an important tool for breaching the city's defenses. The artwork features a caption with the legend 1-15 written in Dutch. This legend provides explanatory information or references to specific details within the artwork, enhancing the viewer's understanding of the depicted scenes and events. The artwork is attributed to Coenraet Decker, a printmaker known for his historical engravings.
