Jan Luyken (1649–1712) – Antique Etching – "Hagenpreken buiten Antwerpen, 1566" (1679–1684)
This historically significant etching by Jan Luyken depicts the Hagenpreken (hedge sermons) outside Antwerp in 1566, an important moment in the early years of the Dutch Revolt. These clandestine Calvinist gatherings took place in open fields and forests, as Protestantism was officially banned in the Spanish Netherlands. In the foreground, a minister preaches under a large tree, surrounded by a congregation of men, women, and children. Some Calvinist guards, armed with spears, provide protection. The background features a detailed cityscape of Antwerp, reinforcing the historical and geographical context of the event. This etching was published in Amsterdam between 1679 and 1684 by Joannes van Someren, Abraham Wolfgang, and Hendrick & Dirk Boom. It serves as an important historical record of religious repression and the resistance movements of the 16th century.Artist or Maker: Jan Luyken (1649–1712)Publishers: Widow Joannes van Someren, Abraham Wolfgang, Hendrick & Dirk BoomMedium: Etching on paperDate: 1679–1684Dimensions: 37 cm × 32 cm Condition Description:This work is in good condition overall.
