European School – Set of 2 Drawings - Old Master Drawings – "Portraits of Harlequin and Columbine in French Theatre" (c.1700s)
This set of two striking Old Master drawings from the European School of the 18th century portrays two iconic figures from French and Italian Commedia dell'arte: Harlequin (Arlequino) and Columbine. Created in ink and watercolor on paper, these expressive theatrical portraits capture the dramatic intensity and elaborate costumes of stage performers from the era.The first drawing showcases Columbine, a central female character in Commedia dell'arte. She is adorned with an elaborate jester-inspired crown, decorated with small bells, and a richly detailed costume. Her poised expression and delicate features reflect the refined theatrical aesthetics of 18th-century European performances. The second drawing represents Harlequin, identified by the inscription "Arlequino, primmai franceso, " referencing his influence in French theatrical traditions. His distinctive hat with a curled feather and his mischievous gaze highlight his role as a clever trickster and comedic servant, a beloved character in both Italian and French stage productions. These rare and historically significant illustrations likely belonged to a series of theatrical character studies, emphasizing costume design and facial expression, key elements in 18th-century performance art. The refined shading, detailed inkwork, and subtle watercolor washes suggest an experienced hand, possibly influenced by Italian or French theatrical engravings of the period.Provenance: The Winfield Robbins print collection of Arlington, Massachusetts.Artist or maker:European School, 18th centuryMedium:Ink and watercolor on paperDate:c.1700sDimensions:20 cm x 28 cmCondition Description:This work is in good condition overall.
