Henry Teesdale (1776 - 1856) – Chart of the Pacific Ocean with Colonial Toponyms incl. Alashka, Nuyts Land & New Georgia – (1834)
”Chart of the Pacific Ocean”This finely engraved Chart of the Pacific Ocean by Henry Teesdale was published in London in 1834 and spans from the western coasts of North and South America to Australia, Southeast Asia, and New Zealand. The map is rich with 19th-century toponyms reflecting colonial influence and early geographic speculation. Notable names include "Alashka" and "Russian America" in the Pacific Northwest, "New Georgia, " "New Hanover, " and "New Cornwall" among the islands, and “Nuyts Land, ” “Endrachts Land, ” and “Lions Land” across Australia. Carefully hand-coloured, the map combines exploration-era nomenclature with a classical cartographic grid, including engraved longitude scales and detailed archipelagos across Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia. The work was drawn and engraved by John Dower in Pentonville, London, and published by Teesdale in 1834. Henry Teesdale was a prominent early 19th-century British mapmaker and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He published several atlases and thematic maps, often collaborating with leading engravers of his time. John Dower (fl. 1830s–1860s) was one of his frequent collaborators, known for his finely executed steel engravings. Teesdale's charts reflect the intersection of imperial interests and scientific cartography, offering insight into how the Pacific was conceptualized during the age of exploration and colonial expansion.Artist or Maker:Henry Teesdale / John Dower (engraver)Dimensions:39 cm x 29 cmMedium:Hand-coloured engravingDate:1834Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
