Samuel Lewis (1782–1865) – Map of Devonshire with Electoral Divisions and Market Towns – Hand-Coloured Engraving (1844)
”Devonshire” This detailed hand-coloured county map of Devonshire was published in 1844 as part of Samuel Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary of England. It outlines key towns including Exeter, Plymouth, Totnes, Kingsbridge, Newton Abbot, Torquay, and Barnstaple. Roads, rivers, and polling places are marked with fine clarity, while the boundaries of the county and its divisions are accentuated in colour. Designed as both a reference and educational resource, this map offered 19th-century readers a precise overview of local administration, infrastructure, and geography.Samuel Lewis was an English publisher renowned for his multi-volume topographical dictionaries, which combined concise historical and geographical summaries with finely engraved maps. His works became indispensable to Victorian scholars, travelers, and landowners, and were praised for their accuracy and accessibility. The maps in Lewis’ dictionaries were typically engraved by skilled craftsmen, with this particular example attributed to T. Starling after a design by Robert Creighton.Artist or Maker:Samuel LewisDimensions:40 cm x 35 cmMedium:Hand-coloured engravingDate:1844Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
