Elias Fries (1794–1878) – Set of 2 Large Mushroom Prints – Polyporus Frondosus & Polyporus Confluens – Chromolithographs (1860–1866)
This pair of chromolithographs originates from Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar (Sweden's Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms), published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm between 1860 and 1866. It depicts two striking polypore species: Polyporus frondosus (now known as Grifola frondosa, or hen-of-the-woods) and Polyporus confluens, both recognized for their clustered, leaf-like formations.Elias Fries, one of the foremost mycologists of the 19th century, produced this landmark work as both a scientific guide and visual reference for mushroom identification. With illustrations by Elias Pettersson and Petter Åkerlund, and chromolithographic printing by A. J. Salmson, the plates represent a fusion of scientific rigor and artistic elegance. The series remains a foundational reference in the history of mycology.Artist or Maker:Elias FriesDimensions:53 cm x 35 cmMedium:ChromolithographyDate:1860–1866Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
