Pieter Schenk (1660–1718) – Map of Schlettstadt in Alsace / Eine aus denen X. Reich-Staedten im Elsass – Copperplate Engraving (1684)
"Schlettstadt" This map shows the fortified layout of Schlettstadt (moder-day Sélestat), one of the ten Imperial Free Cities (Reichsstädte) of Alsace. The bird’-eye perspective highlights the sta-shaped defensive structure, surrounding moats, and roadways leading to Strasbourg and Breisach. The design reflects the city’s strategic importance during the early modern period, particularly within the Holy Roman Empire. The accompanying German text contextualizes Schlettstadt's historical and political role.Pieter Schenk was a Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher active in Amsterdam and Leipzig. He is known for his detailed town plans, map engravings, and city views which were often compiled into atlases such as the Hecatompolis or Atlas Contractus. His works are notable for their clean linework and precision, offering valuable historical insight into the urban landscapes of early 18t-century Europe.Artist or Maker: Pieter Schenk Dimensions: 19 cm x 30 cm Medium: Engraving Date: 1684 Condition Report: This work is in good condition overall.
