Giacomo Filippo Ameti (1654 – 1707) – Map of the Patrimony of Saint Peter / Patrimonio di S. Pietro con le sue piú cospicue strade antiche e moderne – Large Han-Colored Copperplate Engraving (1696)
"Patrimonio di S. Pietro"This finely detailed map titled Patrimonio di S. Pietro depicts the historical region of the Papal States surrounding Rome, including ancient and modern roads, key estates (casali e tenute), and notable geographic and ecclesiastical landmarks. The work was described by Roman cartographer Giacomo Filippo Ameti and published by Domenico de Rossi in Rome in 1696. The cartouche features mythological and allegorical figures with the Latin inscription Patrimonium Petri olim Tuscia Suburbicaria, indicating its roots in the ancient region of Etruria. This map served both as a geographic reference and as a symbolic representation of the territorial holdings and influence of the Papacy. Its rich decorative elements and topographical accuracy made it a significant visual document of late 17t-century papal administration.Giacomo Filippo Ameti was an Italian cartographer active in the second half of the 17th century, known for his detailed maps of Rome and the Papal States. His works are often associated with the prominent Roman publisher Domenico de Rossi, whose family printing house issued many important architectural and cartographic engravings during the Baroque period.Artist or Maker: Giacomo Filippo Ameti / Domenico de Rossi Dimensions: 56 cm x 65 cm Medium: Engraving Date: 1696 Condition Report: This work is in good condition overall.
