This engraved map, titled La Gaule, delineates the ancient provinces of Gaul—Lugdunensis, Aquitania, Belgica, and Narbonensis—overlaid on the outline of modern France. Principal cities, rivers, and topographical features are carefully labelled, with each province distinguished by a coloured boundary line. A decorative title cartouche at lower left includes the scale in French miles, while a latitude–longitude grid frames the sheet. Originally surveyed and drawn by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, the plate was corrected and reissued in Year III of the French Republic (1794) by Charles-François Delamarche’s workshop, incorporating post-Revolution improvements in geographic data and republican cartographic standards.Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766) was a leading French cartographer and geographer at the Dépôt de la Marine in Paris.
