Joost de Pape (1619–1646) – Statue of a Roman Orator – Copperplate Engraving by Peeter van de Bailliu (17th Century)
This finely executed copperplate engraving features a classical Roman orator in a dignified pose, his right hand raised to his chest, symbolizing authority and eloquence. The figure is shown in a traditional toga, standing atop a plinth inscribed with classical lettering and a heraldic emblem. The work belongs to the 17th-century antiquarian tradition of recording Greco-Roman statuary, combining archaeological interest with idealized artistic rendering. The composition was drawn byJoost de Pape (1619–1646), a Flemish artist known for his detailed classical studies, and engraved by Peeter van de Bailliu, an accomplished printmaker active in Antwerp and Paris. Their collaboration reflects the Baroque-era fascination with antiquity and its visual transmission through print.Artist or Maker: Joost de Pape (artist), Peeter van de Bailliu (engraver)Dimensions: 37 cm x 24 cmMedium: Copperplate EngravingDate: 17th CenturyCondition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
