Jost Amman (1539–1591) – Putto on Horseback with Banner – Woodcut from Kunstbüchlin (1599)
This striking 16th-century woodcut depicts a wingless putto (cherubic child) confidently riding a rearing horse while holding a fluttering banner. The scene merges allegorical and heraldic motifs, typical of Renaissance pageantry and courtly symbolism. The woodcut comes from Kunstbüchlin, a richly illustrated book of military figures, ceremonial costumes, equestrian portraits, and symbolic emblems published in 1599. This specific image exemplifies Jost Amman's distinctive linear style and his ability to imbue small-scale prints with dramatic energy.Jost Amman (1539–1591) was a prolific Swiss-German artist and one of the last great illustrators of the woodcut tradition. Best known for his contributions to illustrated books, Amman produced thousands of designs that captured the visual culture of late Renaissance Europe, from fashion to armory and emblematic imagery.Artist or Maker: Jost AmmanDimensions: 14 cm x 11 cmMedium: WoodcutDate: 1599Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
