Hendrik Spilman (1721–1784) – Set of 2 Views of Namur – De Stad en 't Kasteel Namen – Copperplate Engravings (1746)
This pair of copperplate engravings depicts two distinct panoramic views of the city and fortress of Namur (Namen), Belgium. The first view shows the castle and cityscape along the Meuse River, titled De Stad en 't Kasteel Namen, te zien van de Plante langs de Maas. The second captures the same site from a different angle, along the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, dated 1740 in the plate. These works were engraved by Hendrik Spilman in 1746 after drawings by the artist known by the monogram JBD, likely referring to Jan de Beijer. The engravings are finely executed in the Dutch topographical tradition and were part of a larger series of civic and landscape views published in the mid-18th century.Hendrik Spilman (1721–1784) was a Dutch engraver known for his architectural and townscape engravings, particularly those derived from contemporary draftsmen such as De Beijer. These views capture the fortified identity and riverine life of Namur with high documentary value and refined detail.Artist or Maker: Hendrik SpilmanDimensions: 25 cm x 19 cmMedium: Copperplate EngravingDate: 1746Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
