Original antique set of 4 engravings is from Charles Gavard’s "Galeries historiques de Versailles, Serie II, De Clovis-1643". The works were published in Paris, 1838-49.King Louis-Philippe I (1773–1850) played a key role in the creation of "Galeries historiques de Versailles" by Charles Gavard. In the 1830s, he transformed the Palace of Versailles into a Museum of the History of France, commissioning artworks to illustrate the nation’s past. To document this collection, Gavard produced a series of engravings and lithographs using his innovative reproduction techniques. With the king’s support, the book became both an artistic album and a historical record, preserving France’s cultural heritage.Charles Gavard (1794–1871) was a French engineer, publisher, and lithographer. He invented the diagraphe, a device for reproducing paintings. Gavard is best known for compiling and publishing the "Galeries historiques de Versailles, " an extensive collection of engravings of the artworks in the Palace of Versailles.
