Leslie Ward (1851–1922) – Coquelin aîné – Chromolithograph Caricature from Vanity Fair (May 9, 1895)
This original Vanity Fair caricature, published on May 9, 1895, features the celebrated French actor Benoît-Constant Coquelin, known as "Coquelin aîné." Depicted in a confident, theatrical stance, the image exaggerates his commanding presence and expressive personality—qualities for which he was renowned on stage. The print is part of the famous Vanity Fair series of "Men of the Day, " known for satirical yet respectful portrayals of cultural, political, and artistic figures of the era. The image was drawn by the publication’s most prolific caricaturist, Leslie Ward, under his pseudonym "Spy, " and printed using the chromolithography technique. This example is particularly notable for bearing Coquelin’s original autograph and date: "C. Coquelin, June 95." Leslie Ward (1851–1922) was a British portrait artist and caricaturist who contributed over 1,300 illustrations to Vanity Fair between 1873 and 1911. His witty and sophisticated style helped define the look and prestige of the magazine, immortalizing leading figures of Victorian and Edwardian Britain and beyond.Artist or Maker:Leslie WardDimensions:27 cm × 39 cmMedium:ChromolithographDate:May 9, 1895Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
