William MacKenzie (1794–1868) – Set of 2 Plates – Fishes – Hand-Coloured Engravings (1859–1868)
This set includes two original hand-coloured engravings depicting a variety of fish species, each scientifically labeled and arranged by order and family. The first plate features Dragon-fish, Pipe-fishes, the Common Sturgeon, and the Whale Eurypharynx, while the second presents species such as the Sea Needle-fish, Telescope Fish, Mackerel, and Swordfish (Xiphias gladius). The engravings were published by William MacKenzie as part of a comprehensive 19th-century natural history series and reflect the educational and artistic values of Victorian scientific illustration. The precise colour application and attention to anatomical detail reflect the high standards of production under MacKenzie's direction.William MacKenzie, a 19th-century British publisher based in London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, was known for producing grand illustrated volumes. His natural history works were particularly admired for their visual appeal and educational value. The engravings in this set reflect the meticulous style typical of the era and were likely prepared by skilled anonymous illustrators under MacKenzie’s direction.Artist or Maker:William MacKenzieDimensions:24 cm x 31 cmMedium:Hand-Coloured EngravingsDate:1859–1868Condition Report:This work is in good condition overall.
