Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654–1725) – Map of Namur / Namen, in het landschap van die naam, op het zamen vloeyen van Maas en Sambre – Engraving (1702)
This historical engraving depicts the fortified city of Namur (Namen), strategically located at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers in present-day Belgium. The map illustrates the extensive bastion fortifications surrounding the city and citadel, along with nearby natural and man-made features, such as roads, fields, and the bridge over the Meuse. The text beneath, in Dutch and Latin, refers to the military events of 1692 when the city was taken by the French under Louis XIV, and its later recapture in 1695 by the forces of King William III of England. The map offers a vivid top-down plan consistent with Baroque-era military cartography. Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654–1725) was a German engraver and publisher known for his highly detailed maps and illustrated theological works, contributing significantly to the visual culture of the Baroque period.
