Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654–1725) – Map of Mons / Bergen, in Henegouw, aan de Trouille – Engraving (1702)
This antique engraving represents the fortified city of Mons (Bergen), located on the Trouille River in the province of Hainaut, present-day Belgium. The map displays the bastioned fortifications and surrounding terrain in clear topographic detail, reflecting the city’s strategic significance during the War of the Grand Alliance. According to the Latin and Dutch inscriptions below, the city was captured by the French in 1691 under the reign of Louis XIV. The fortification style, with elaborate outer works and angular bastions, aligns with the military engineering principles of Vauban. Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654–1725) was a German engraver and publisher known for his highly detailed maps and illustrated theological works, contributing significantly to the visual culture of the Baroque period.
