Three Theological Virtues - M. Altomonte
Watercolor from the 18th century, rendered in tones of grisaille, sepia, and ink. Paper applied to cardboard. Depiction of the Three Theological Virtues, represented with portraits within medallions respectively of the Emperor of Austria Leopold of Habsburg as Faith, the Great Captain Eugene of Savoy Soissons as Hope, and the Supreme Pontiff His Holiness Pope Clement XI (Gianfrancesco Albani) as Roman Charity. A preparatory pictorial composition for a large fresco execution. Attributed to Martino Altomonte (naturalized Austrian under the name of Johan Martin Hoenberg, Naples 1657 - Vienna 1749) and Carlo Innocenzo Carlone (1686 - 1775). Both painters collaborated on the Belvedere Palace in Vienna for Prince Eugene of Savoy Soissons. Dimensions within frame: 65x29 cm (Slight signs of wear as shown in attached photos).
