Large Apulian column krater of the Painter of Athen 1714. About 360 BC. Height 52,4cm, width with handles 45,3cm, ø mouth 36,9cm. Vessel for mixing wine with water with double columnar handles with plates on the top. On the frontside a dionysian scenery with the youthful sitting god holding a thyrsos in the middle. He is looking back to a maenad with offering bowl coming from left while on the right a casually standing satyr holding rhyton and kalathos. On the rearside three draped youths in a discussion, two of them with walking staff, above as attribute of their education a tablet with lashed stylus and as attribute of their athleticism two halteres (dumbbell or jumping weights). Details in white and yellow. The hollow areas covered with a slightly reddish brown slip. Beautiful example form the early Apulian Rich Style! With copy of the catalogue of the Grisebach-auction! Foot incl. a small part of the corpus broken and reattached, otherwise intact. Formerly in the property of Mrs. and Mr. Becchina. After judicial decision the vase is without limitation tradable in the area of the European Union.
