Bronze figurine of Demeter / Ceres. - Bronze figurine of Demeter / Ceres wearing a sleeveless, high-girdled chiton and a lavish himation capite velato. The hair is adorned with a diadem showing her high rank as a goddess. With her right hand she presents a bundle of poppy capsules, one of the main attributes of Demeter. The important connection of Demeter and poppy is going back even to minoan traditions, proven for example by the Poppy Goddess of Gazi . An almost identical figure of Juno in the Bibliothèque Nationale differs only in the attribute in the right hand. Both figures are apparently from the same workshop and probably out of the same context. Roman Imperial Period, 1st - 2nd century AD. Height 17,2cm. Attractive patina, intact.
