SOLZHENITSYN ALEKSANDER: (1918-2008) Russian Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1970. T.L.S., in Cyrillic, one page, 4to, Cavendish, Vermont, 19th August 1981, to Edward Bennett Williams. Solzhenitsyn congratulates his correspondent on their victory and thanks him, and his assistants, 'for having removed that obstacle from me with your talent and persistence', adding that he holds the friendly support and sympathy shown in high esteem and enquiring 'Will the decision be sent to us verbatim from the court?'. In concluding Solzhenitsyn remarks that he will be sending a cheque and one of his books in a few days. About EX
Edward Bennett Williams (1920-1988) American Lawyer. In 1977 Solzhenitsyn retained Williams, a high-profile defence lawyer, to defend Alexander Ginzburg, an imprisoned dissident in the Soviet Union who had been arrested by the KGB, who was a close friend of the novelist.
