DALLAS GEORGE M.: (1792-1864) American Politician and Diplomat, Vice President of the United States 1845-49 and United States Minister to the United Kingdom 1856-61. Dallas County in Texas, as well as a number of other American counties, cities and towns, was named in his honour. A.L.S., G. M. Dallas, one page, small 4to, London, 6th July 1856, to a gentleman, marked 'Private'. Dallas writes, in full, 'Agreeably to your request, I send you a sketch (no longer present) of the ideas which occupied my mind at Mr. Peabody's 4th of July dinner. As to the language in which they were uttered, it has escaped my memory as rapidly as it did my lips'. With an ink annotation in an unidentified hand to the upper edge.
