GOMEZ MAXIMO: (1836-1905) Maximo Gomez y Baez. Dominican General, and prominent figure in Cuba´s Ten Years´ War against Spain 1868-78. Military Commander in Cuba´s War of Independence 1895-98. Gomez is remembered for his violent and unscrupulous methods, scorched-earth policy, dynamiting passenger trains, torching Spanish loyalists´ properties and plantations, and torturing and killing Spanish soldiers and sympathizers. Rare L.S., `M. Gomez´, one page, 4to, Headquarters at Songorrongo, Cuba, 30th June 1895, in Spanish. Signed by Mario Gomez in his capacity as ''General en Jefe'' (''Chief General'') during the Cuban war of Independence, which only started four months before the present letter was signed. Also signed by SALVADOR CISNEROS BETANCOURT (1828-1914) Marquis of Santa Lucia. President of the republic of Cuba 1873-75. The written document bears the heading ''Republic of Cuba - Liberation army - Third Corps - Camaguey'', and is the appointment of Antonio Lopez as Sargent of the Liberation Army for his services in favour of the Independence of Cuba. With an official ink stamp to the verso. Overall age wear and staining. Left edge trimmed. F
