REED EDWARD: (1830-1906) British naval architect, author, politician and railroad magnate, Chief Constructor of the Royal Navy (1863-70). A.L.S., E. J. Reed, one page, 8vo, Broadway Chambers, Westminster, London, 12th April 1886, to [William Henry] Preece. Reed writes, in full, 'I should feel much obliged if you would kindly (if you see no objection) sign Dr. Elgar's Paper enclosed (no longer present). He is a first-class man. It is too late for this year I know, but I want to have it very strongly signed in anticipation of next year's election'. A letter of interesting associations. A few minor stains and creases, otherwise VG
William Henry Preece (1834-1913) Welsh electrical engineer and inventor.
Francis Elgar (1845-1909) English naval architect who worked as Reed's chief professional assistant from 1871.
