GOMES ANTONIO CARLOS: (1836-1896) Brazilian Composer. Largely considered the first New World composer having his work accepted in Europe. A very fine A.L.S., `A. Carlos Gomes´, two pages, 8vo, Milan, 18th August 1877, to Signora Antonietta Fricci, in Italian. On his personal printed stationery, Gomes sends a thanking letter to the Soprano Frecci after a performance of Tosca, and states in part `Parole non bastano per manifestarvi tutta la mia gratitudine… Voi, illustre artista, avete dato vita alla Fosca moribonda! Grazie, grazie…´ (“Words are not enough to prove you all my gratitude… You, illustrious artist, have given life to the dying Fosca! Thank you thank you..”), and before concluding saying `Il nome di Antonietta Fricci resta per la vitainciso nel mio cuore riconoscente´ (“Antonietta Fricci's name remains engraved in my grateful heart for life”) With blank integral leaf.
