GROUCHY EMMANUEL DE: (1766-1847) Marshal of France. Marquis de Grouchy. A good L.S., `Emm. Grouchy´, a bold and large signature, one page, 4to, Nantes, 9th March 1798, in French. Grouchy, in his capacity as General Commandant of the 12th military division, signs the present certificate in favour of a wounded soldier, Head of drums Etienne Gerome, stating `…bléssé d'un coup de feu sur le pubis et d'un coup de sabre sur la partie postérieure de l'épaule droite à l'affaire qui eut lieu le 13 septembre 1793 devant Menin…´ (Translation: “…wounded by a shot on the pubis and a saber cut on the posterior part of the right shoulder in the affair which took place on September 13, 1793 at Menin…”) The document bears at the base three countersignatures by members of the 27th brigade, including General Lefranc. Also bearing to the upper left corner a Republican red wax seal in good condition. Overall minor age wear and creasing, mostly to edges, with few tears. About G

The report refers to the Battle of Menin, which took place on 12th & 13th September 1793 during the First Coalition war in Flanders with a victory of the French troops.
