NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. A fine L.S., `Np´, one page, gilt edges, 4to, Trianon, 8th March 1813, to the Duc de Feltre, in French. The present letter is dated only three months after the catastrophic retreat of the French Grande Armée from Russia, and refers to the German campaign. Napoleon states `Monsieur le Duc de Feltre, vous enverrez un décret, par lequel j´ai nommé Général de Brigade, le Colonel Piquet, du 6º de Dragons - Il est convenable que cet officier se rende sans délai en France´ (“Monsieur le Duc de Feltre, you will send a decree, by which I have appointed Colonel Piquet of the 6th Dragoons, as General of Brigade - It would be convenient that this officer goes to France without delay”) Picquet leaded the 1st Corps of Cavalry in Saxe during the German campaign. Three days after the present letter was written, Russian troops entered the city of Berlin, and few days later the city of Hamburg, at the same time, on 17th March 1813, Prussia officially declared war on France.
