NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. A fine L.S., `Np´, one page, gilt edges, 4to, Trianon, 14th March 1813, to the Duc de Feltre, in French. The present letter is dated only three months after the catastrophic retreat of the French Grande Armée from Russia, and refers to the military situation in the regions of Oder, Vistula and Spandau (at today´s date Poland and East Germany). Napoleon states `Monsieur le Duc de Feltre, je vous envoye l´état de situation des places de l´Oder et de la Vistule, tel que le Vice Roi me l´envoye - J´aurais desiré quelque details sur l´artillerie. On a laisse trop de compagnies d´artillerie à Spandau…´ (“Monsieur le Duc de Feltre, I send you the state of the situation of the positions at the Oder and the Vistula, such as the Viceroy sends it to me - I would have liked some details on the artillery. We left too many artillery companies in Spandau...”) Accompanied by a small 12mo holograph pinned receipt to the bottom left corner. VG

Only 3 days after the present letter was written, on 17th March 1813, Prussia officially declared war on France.
