BERTHIER LOUIS ALEXANDRE: (1753-1815), Marshal of France, Prince of Neuchatel. Chief of Staff under Napoleon. A good L.S., `Alexandre´, one page, 4to, Rheims, 14th March 1814, in French. The present letter is written during the Campaign of France, only one month before Napoleon´s capitulation. Berthier sends an order to the Commandant of the Sermoise military area, south of Soissons, urging him to `…de partir à la reception du present ordre avec sa troupe pour se render aujourd´hui à Fismes, où il s´établira et restera jusqu´à nouvel ordre…´ (Translation: “…to depart immediately, together with his troops, and to go today to Fismes, where he will remain until new orders are given…”) Small age wear, mostly to edges, otherwise G
Napoleon I arrived to Soissons on the 12th of March 1814, and will enter Rheims on the 14th March, the day of the present letter. The battle of Rheims took place a day earlier, 13th of March.
