MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. An excellent vintage signed 8 x 6 photograph, the unusual image showing Montgomery seated in a half-length pose, wearing his uniform, at a dining table whilst enjoying a pre-Christmas dinner, although flatly refusing to be served champagne by a waitress at his side. Photograph by P.A. - Reuter of Fleet Street, London, and bearing their credit stamp to the verso and the printed caption No bubbly for Monty. Signed ('Montgomery of Alamein') by Montgomery in turquoise fountain pen ink to the lower white border and dated 20th December 1949 in his hand. VG
Montgomery, who was teetotal, served as Chairman of the Commanders-in-Chief Committee of the Western Union from 1948-51 during which time he resided at the Marquis de Ganay's Louis XIII-style Chateau de Courances near Paris.
